In the month of December, 2017, some areas of the southern part of Sri Lanka experienced a stormy wind due to which an enormous amount of destruction happened at St. Claret Estate, Ittapana. It was reported that 1,324 rubber trees got completely uprooted while 986 trees got partly damaged. Together with the rubber trees, a good number of tea, cinnamon, banana, cloves and pepper trees also got destroyed due to the same stormy wind. Fr. S. Devaseelan, who is the administrator at the estate, took measures to inform the needed authorities and clean up the damaged areas.
